Amguid crater

About 100 thousand years ago, an area in the southwest of the Great Algerian Sahara was hit by a massive meteorite with a width of about 70 meters and a depth of 500 meters. This spot from the satellite can be clearly seen, the crater has an almost circular shape with steep walls and surrounded by sandstone .

Shallow canyons penetrate the plateau from the east and west and spread into the sandy sea of Arak Abu Zarfa to the north. A valley at the Aguelman Rahla water basin, contains an unusually high proportion of pre-Islamic tombs. Rock art, Neolithic tools, and other prehistoric relics indicate that the entire region was occupied thousands of years ago when the desert climate was less arid. the name of Amguid became from a small village near to the spot .
